Sad Panda was created for a Grayson Perry competition where I had to make a friend for Grayson’s childhood toy bear, Alan Measles. The piece must be inspired by a theme from one of York’s museums. The theme I chose was from the York Castle Museum where they exhibited the birth, life and death of the Edwardian era. I used the coffin decoration patterns, flowers and wedding photos to create the bears surface decoration. At the time of the competition, I had miscarried my baby, and subconsciously I poured my grief and anger into the work. The special end to this story is that years later my youngest born chose a panda as his comfort toy.
