Inspired by the work of ceramic artist Grayson Perry, I began to play with illustration on hand-built clay forms during my degree. My journey to become an artist didn’t begin for another 9 years. Unaware, I was controlled by anxiety, and using perfectionism as measure of control, making the leap to putting my authentic self out there was just too scary.
I always knew what I wanted to do, I just had low self-esteem and a lack of confidence to be able to take the risk. It was only with the help of a life coach that I gained personal insight into my behaviour. With this new knowledge I changed my ways, and I reflected upon the work I created at university. I now understood the importance of what I had created, and the thoughts and feelings that were reflected in my work. My work became my voice when I felt I had none.
January 2024, decision made, I was finally going to become a ceramic artist. I have always loved stories, whether that was reading a book, making them up with the kids or listening to a favourite country song. There is something especially powerful about a well-crafted song, it resonates deep inside. It is this emotional connection that I would like to recreate in my work. Everyone is unique, has a story special to them, and we should celebrate our differences. I capture these impressions and create bespoke art as unique as you. Profits from my business fund confidence through creativity for children in York.
